Poker is played with 2 to a maximum of 10 players. At the beginning of the game, all players receive two cards that they are not allowed to show to the others. Poker is played with 52 cards, i.e. one deck of cards. The game can now begin, after several actions everyone has 7 cards in his possession (5 cards on the table for everyone and two cards in his hand), except the players who dropped out during the bidding. The 7 cards are needed to determine who ultimately has the best combination and is therefore the winner. The intention is to show the best 5 of the 7 cards you have. If you happen to have the best combination, you can remove the poker chips from the table and add them to your own stack.
Your chance to make a hand (combination) in various ways, you know by now that the one with the best hand is the winner. Below you see the different hand strength in a row, as you can see the Royal Flush is the strongest card combination you can make, it is a street of cards (5 in a row) in the same suit and sign (suited). You’ll notice the occasional English terms, which isn’t surprising because poker is a card game that has its origins in America. You learn the terms by yourself, don’t worry about it now.
You can see the 10 hand combinations that are possible in poker, the highest hand you can get is the aforementioned Royal Flush, via Full House, Straight, Three of a Kind and the Pairs we come to the lowest conceivable poker hand, the High Card. In this combination you have 5 different cards in your hand that do not play together in any way. You understand that the chance of the Flush is much lower than for example a Two Pair, the harder it is to make a combination, the higher the value of that combination is.
In poker, you win if you turn out to have the best hand at the end of the round. Very often, players drop out during the bidding rounds, you’ll find that there’s often only one or two players left in the pot when the cards need to be shown (showdown). High bets and bluffs cause players to drop out early. Below we’ll tell you how the game continues after receiving the first two cards (hole cards), as you know by now a good starting hand is very important for winning.
The game can begin
First it is determined who the dealer is, after each round the player on the left after the dealer becomes the new dealer and so it goes on. If there’s a regular dealer, you can see who’s on the dealer spot by using the dealer button. When you start playing, it should be clear what the bets are, the limits at the table determine the height of the first bets. In No Limit poker players can bet unlimited amounts, in Limit poker there is a limit to the bet, above the maximum, no bets may be made. The latter is safer for inexperienced players as it prevents you from losing all your poker chips at once.
At poker, every round consists of a fixed pattern
The Blinds are set
The two players sitting to the left of the dealer now make sure there is an amount in the pot. They bet a prearranged amount. The player next to the dealer (Small Blind) bets half of the amount and the second player (Big Blind) bets the full amount of the limits. These limits are often indicated as 20/40 or 100/200, so you can immediately see what both players have lost at that time.
First betting round is a fact
The third player from the dealer, the one who sits next to the Big Blind may now be the first to make an action. There are 3 choices for him to make: Call, Raise or Fold. Call means that you will play against the same amount of money of the last person who bet, in this case the Big Blind. With Raisen the amount is at least doubled and with Fold the player stops with these rounds. So if you Fold you don’t have to make a bet and it won’t cost you anything.
The Flop and the 2nd betting round of the game
The dealer now provides three open cards on the table, we call this The Flop. For the remaining players there are again a number of choices to be made. In addition to Call, Raise, or Re-raise (raising a Raise from the predecessor), you now also have the option to check. Checking can only be done when nothing has been wagered during the Flop. If there is a bet then you can choose between Call, Raise, Re-raise or Folden.
The Turn, the 4th card is placed on the table
The dealer will now place the next playing card open on the table, the Turn. By placing this 4th card, the bidding begins again.
The River and final round of betting
Now the dealer brings the 5th and last card on the table. This is the River, again the bidding begins. When the last player has made his bet the cards are shown (Showdown). Winner is the one with the highest card combination. This round is over and the players are getting ready for another chance.
